Columns

John Henry Parker

a round pillar; the term includes the base, shaft, and capital: in Grecian and Roman architecture. Tho column is so important a feature that the exact proportions of its several parts are settled, and vary according to the Order. The term is also sometimes applied to the pillars or piers in Norman and Gothic architecture.
